5 Tips to Prevent a Dental Emergency

As much as we would like to be able to predict when accidents are on the horizon, it sadly doesn’t work that way. The unpredictability of dental emergencies is a big part of what makes them so stressful. Though you may not always be able to prevent them, there are still several things you can do to lessen the chance of them occurring. Read on to learn five tips that will make dental emergencies less likely to come up.

Tip #1: Eat Healthier

Sweet, carb-heavy, and starchy foods can do a lot of damage to your pearly whites since they feed dangerous oral bacteria. Lower your chances of developing cavities by eating them in moderation. Eat a tooth-healthy diet that consists of lean meats, fish, low-fat or fat-free dairy products, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Calcium and protein help strengthen your teeth and bones, so they’re a tasty way to defend against oral health issues.

Tip #2: Brush and Floss Often

Brushing your teeth twice per day for two minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste will remove plaque, strengthen your teeth, and protect your enamel from harm. Make sure to replace your toothbrush every three to four months since that’s usually around the time when the bristled are starting to wear. Floss at least once each day, preferably before you go to bed. This will 40% of the plaque on your teeth as well as food particles stuck between them. If traditional dental floss isn’t right for you, consider investing in a Waterpik or another type of water flosser.

Tip #3: Stay Hydrated

When your salivary glands aren’t producing enough saliva, this leads to dry mouth, which raises your chances of developing gum disease, tooth decay, and other oral health problems. Make sure to drink plenty of water to keep your mouth hydrated. Additionally, chewing sugar-free gum and eating sugar-free candy or crisp, fresh fruits and vegetables increases saliva production.

Tip #4: Wear a Mouthguard

If you play contact sports like football and hockey, wear a mouthguard to protect your mouth from harm. Though they can be purchased at drug stores and sporting goods stores, you may want to consider speaking with your dentist about having one custom-made. If you grind your teeth or clench your jaw at night, mouthguards can also provide a cushion between your pearly whites to prevent damage like excessive wear, chips, and cracks.

Tip #5: Address Issues as Soon as They Arise

Rather than waiting or hoping an issue corrects itself, make sure to address oral health problems as soon as they pop up. Not only will this prevent worse issues from occurring down the line, but it will also likely save you money in the long term.
